Council Acknowledges Federation University Research into Impacts of New Developments
Yarriambiack Shire Council has acknowledged important research investigating the impacts of major mining and renewable energy developments on farming communities across the Wimmera Southern Mallee region.
At its Ordinary Meeting held on 26 November 2025, Council noted Federation University's research report, Understanding the Impacts of New Developments (Mining and Energy) on the Wimmera Southern Mallee, and acknowledged Council's role in advocating for the research to be undertaken.
The research was conducted between February and June 2025 and involved interviews with seventeen farmers from across the Wimmera Southern Mallee. The study explored the impacts of wind and solar energy projects, mineral sands mining, and transmission line developments on individuals, farming businesses and local communities.
Initiated following discussions between Yarriambiack Shire Council and the Southern Wimmera Renewables Research Association, the project responded to concerns regarding the increasing pressures these developments are placing on farming communities, particularly in relation to mental health, wellbeing and community connection.
The research examined how farmers are navigating rapid land use change, heightened expectations and ongoing external pressures. It highlighted significant impacts on individual wellbeing, personal identity and perceptions of community as the region continues to experience substantial industry and infrastructure development.
Council representatives, including the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councillors, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer, attended the official launch of the research at Federation University's Horsham Campus on 06 November 2025.
Council expressed its appreciation to Dr Cathy Tischler for her dedication in advancing the project and acknowledged the research as an important first step in encouraging ongoing dialogue and increasing awareness of the mental health impacts that significant change can have on local communities.
Yarriambiack Shire Council is pleased to have supported advocacy efforts that contributed to the research being undertaken and recognises the value of evidence-based research in informing discussions about the future of the region.
