Election Campaign Donation Return – What It Means

An Election Campaign Donation Return is a formal statement that discloses any donations or gifts received by a candidate during their election campaign. This requirement promotes transparency and accountability in local government elections.


Obligations Under the Local Government Act 2020
  • Section 306
    Any person who was a candidate in the council election must submit an Election Campaign Donation Return to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) within 40 days after election day.

  • Section 308
    The Chief Executive Officer is required to ensure that a summary of each Election Campaign Donation Return is published on the Council’s website and remains available until the close of the roll for the next general election.
