The Local Law 2024 establishes rules designed to protect public order, community safety, neighbourhood amenity, and the environment. It also provides Council with the necessary enforcement powers to regulate local issues effectively.
The legislative authority for making and administering this local law is derived from section 71 the Local Government Act 2020, which empowers councils to create local laws to manage matters within their jurisdiction. Additional legislative frameworks referenced in the development and application of the local law include:
- Environment Protection Act 2017: Which Council may rely upon for enforcement and regulatory authorisations where environmental matters are more appropriately addressed under state legislation.
- Country Fire Authority Act 1958: Relevant when fire hazards or unsafe property conditions intersect with Council’s regulatory responsibilities.
The Local Law adopted by Council was formally enacted under section 74 of the Local Government Act 2020 and outlines objectives including protecting community safety, neighbourhood amenity, public assets, and the natural and built environment.
