There Is More To Recycling
Published on 16 October 2025
In Yarriambiack Shire, recycling is more than just our kerbside mixed recycling and glass bins.
Our transfer stations and other locations take a variety of materials that we recycle rather than landfilling - these include:
E-waste: electronic and electrical waste is accepted at our transfer stations at no charge. This material is taken to be processed at Axis Worx in Horsham, where valuable materials are recovered and used in other manufactured goods.
Mobile Phones: are part of e-waste but are collected separately at the Shire Office.
Scrap Metal: all metal items, including whitegoods, are accepted at no charge. This is collected periodically by a scrap metal contractor and reprocessed for further use.
Concrete: concrete from old building jobs is crushed and re-used in other Shire works.
Clean Fill: is utilised at our transfer stations for old landfill cover.
Green Waste: is accepted at no charge and mulched for use as cover in old landfill sites.
Paint Tins: old paint tins are accepted at our transfer stations at no charge. These are delivered to Horsham as part of the PaintBack recycling scheme.
Batteries: household and lithium batteries are accepted at no charge at our transfer stations, the Little Yellow Wagon service, a variety of supermarkets or alternative sites in each town, as well as at our Shire Office. These are collected by Ecobatt for reprocessing.
Car Batteries: are accepted for recycling at our transfer stations.
Mattresses: these are accepted at our transfer stations on a cost recovery basis. These materials are broken down for reuse.
Tyres: all tyres are accepted at our transfer stations on a cost recovery basis. The tyres are processed with the materials being reused in road construction, playground flooring, synthetic turf, athletic tracks, and non-slip mats, etc.
Cardboard - is accepted at our transfer stations at no charge for residents and at cost recovery for business. The cardboard is recycled into other cardboard and paper products.
Glass: container glass is recycled and reused in other quarry product mixes.
DrumMUSTER: chemical drums used in agriculture are recycled and accepted at our transfer stations - only if the drums are triple rinsed.
Fluoro Tubes & Globes: are accepted at our transfer stations and are collected to prevent environmental contamination of hazardous materials via landfill.
Medicine Pill Blister Packs: are collected at the Shire Office.
Please remember, there are plenty of options for items such as furniture, household goods, toys & clothing - if they are still usable. These items can avoid landfill via the services of Op Shop donations, second-hand sellers and online marketplaces.
