Every now and then our waste and recycling contractor contacts Council to inform us that a resident has incorrectly utilised their recycling bin.  This week a resident had presented an overloaded mixed recycling bin for collection that was full of hay and straw.  The problem with this is two-fold - organic waste cannot go into a mixed recycling bin and the bin was too heavy to lift for collection.

Below are lists of what can and cannot go into kerbside recycling bins:

What CAN go into kerbside mixed recycling bins
  • Hard or rigid plastic bottles and containers.
  • Paper and cardboard including clean pizza boxes (no waxed or greasy cardboard).
  • Aluminium cans, foil (scrunched into a ball) and trays.
  • Steel cans.
  • Empty aerosol cans.
What CAN go into kerbside glass recycling bins
  • Glass bottles and jars (that have contained food or drink).
What CANNOT go into any kerbside recycling bins
  • Soft plastics (such as food wrappers, plastic bags and chip packets).
  • Cling wrap.
  • Bagged garbage or bagged cartons.
  • Long life milk or juice cartons.
  • Nappies or baby wipes.
  • Expanded polystyrene and foam (including meat trays).
  • Window glass, glassware, mirrors, Pyrex and crockery.
  • Food and garden waste.
  • Textiles and clothing.
  • Batteries and electronic waste.
  • Syringes.
  • Waxed cardboard.

There are several other options for disposing of materials that cannot go into the kerbside bin, such as our transfer stations, our Little Yellow Wagon or specialised recycling drop-points.

If you wish to recycle a large number of heavy items such as books or magazines, these items collectively can be too heavy when placed into a 240L recycling bin - if you cannot move the bin easily then the bin is too heavy.
