Young Voices Shape a Lasting Legacy at Rabl Park

Yarriambiack Shire Council today officially opened the Rabl Park Skatepark Upgrade Project in Murtoa, celebrating the completion of a community-driven initiative that began with the vision and determination of local students.

The project traces its origins to November 2020, when Grade 5 and 6 students from Murtoa College, led by teacher Peter Downs, petitioned Council for an improved skatepark and a dedicated space for young people.  In March 2021, the students presented their ideas directly to Councillors and Council Officers, highlighting the need for a place where young people could be active, connect with friends and feel a strong sense of belonging.

The opening marks the completion of the latest stage of the Rumble @ Rabl project.  Earlier works delivered a playground, pump track and pathway improvements through more than $157,000 in investment, including funding from the Victorian and Australian Governments and Yarriambiack Shire Council.

Continued advocacy through the 2023 Rabl Park Masterplan secured a further $200,000 from the Victorian Government to construct the new skatepark, half-court basketball facility, pathways and associated infrastructure.

Mayor Cr Andrew McLean said the project demonstrated the positive outcomes that can be achieved when young people are empowered to help shape their community.

"Today is about celebrating the vision and persistence of the young people of Murtoa, whose ideas have become a lasting asset for the whole community."

"What began as a petition from local students has resulted in a vibrant recreational space that encourages physical activity, social connection and community pride."

"Council is incredibly proud to have worked alongside Murtoa College, teacher Peter Downs, government partners and the wider community to bring this vision to life."

"The Rabl Park Skatepark Upgrade Project is a testament to the value of listening to young people and investing in projects that strengthen regional communities. The students who first approached Council have left a remarkable legacy that future generations will enjoy for many years to come."

Council acknowledged the support and investment of the Victorian Government, the Australian Government, Murtoa College, Peter Downs and the Murtoa community in helping deliver the project.

The new facilities will provide an inclusive and welcoming space for recreation, social connection and community activity, further enhancing Rabl Park as a key destination within Murtoa.
