Powerbank tips
Published on 03 October 2025
If you have a current mobile phone, you may well have a portable power bank for that phone as well. While these can be very useful when you need to charge your phone away from home, they are not without issues and safety is a critical.
To use a power bank safely, avoid damaged units, charge on hard, non-flammable surfaces away from heat and sunlight, and use only the original charger and cable. Do not overcharge or leave charging power banks unattended, and allow them to cool down after use and before recharging. Store power banks in a cool, dry place, away from other metal objects, and if a power bank is damaged, smoking, or leaking, evacuate the area and call emergency services.
Charging and Storage
- Use the Right Equipment: Always use the charging cable and adapter that came with your power bank to prevent overcharging and potential hazards.
- Charge on a Hard Surface: Never charge a power bank on flammable materials like beds, sofas, or carpets, as these can trap heat and pose a fire risk.
- Avoid Overheating: Don't charge power banks in high-temperature environments, in direct sunlight, or for extended periods.
- Unattended Charging: Do not leave a power bank charging unattended, especially overnight, to prevent overcharging and potential thermal runaway.
- Cool Down: Allow the power bank to cool down after use before recharging it.
- Proper Storage: Store power banks in a cool, dry place, away from humidity, direct sunlight, and other metal objects that could cause a short circuit.
Identifying and Responding to Damage
- Regular Inspection: Frequently inspect your power bank for any signs of damage, such as cracks, swelling, leaking, or exposed wires.
- Stop Use Immediately: If you notice any damage, or if the power bank is overheating, venting gas, or smoking, stop using it immediately.
Disposal
Finally, make sure you dispose of any redundant power banks properly. They must not be placed in any of your kerbside bins. Place them in special e-waste or battery bins that are designed for this purpose.
