Unregistered Vehicles – What You Need to Know
Unregistered vehicles can create safety risks and attract penalties if driven or parked on public roads. Registration ensures vehicles meet safety standards and include compulsory third-party insurance. Even if a vehicle is stationary on a roadside or nature strip, it must be registered under Victorian law.

What’s Allowed on Private Property
Residents can keep up to two unregistered vehicles on their private property for up to 90 days without a permit. This includes cars, motorbikes, and trailers. If you plan to store more than two unregistered vehicles, or keep them longer than 90 days, you’ll need to apply for a Private Land Use Permit from Council.

How to Stay Compliant
Check your vehicle’s registration status regularly via the VicRoads website or app. If you notice an unregistered vehicle abandoned on public land, report it to Council through our online form or by calling 03 5398 0100. For permit applications or advice, contact Council’s Customer Service team. Together, we can keep our community safe and our streets clear.
