Council commences annual fire prevention inspections of properties from October. September is the time for property owners and residents to prepare for the coming fire season.
Residents are encouraged to mow or slash long grass, tidy overgrown areas, and remove rubbish, debris or stored items that could increase fire risk around their property. Keeping properties well maintained helps to reduce fire fuels and supports a safer community during our hotter months.
Where a property is found to be overgrown, unsightly, or presenting a fire hazard, Council may issue a Fire Prevention Notice – requiring works to be completed within a specified timeframe. If the required works are not completed, Council will arrange for a contractor to complete them at the owner’s expense. The owner or resident may also receive a penalty infringement notice.
Most property owners and residents already do the right thing and maintain properties all year round. Council asks everyone to plan ahead this fire season, check their property early, and take action to help keep our towns and communities fire ready.
