Demolition of former Murtoa Kindergarten Building
Published on 09 December 2025
The demolition of the former Murtoa Kindergarten Building has commenced and will be completed this week.
Chief Executive Officer, Tammy Smith stated, "We recognise this is a bittersweet time for our community as we say farewell to the old kindergarten and maternal child health building that holds many fond memories. However, we also celebrated the opening of the Bani Walup Early Learning and Childcare Centre in Murtoa, featuring modern kindergarten, childcare, and maternal child health facilities."
"The previous building needed significant investment, therefore Council supported the decommissioning and demolition, while strongly backing and advocating for a new centre at Murtoa College", continued Mrs Smith.
Yarriambiack Shire, in collaboration with the community, successfully advocated for and secured a State Government Labor Election commitment for early childhood education in November 2022. This commitment confirmed the construction of an integrated early childhood education and care centre, which included kindergarten, childcare, and maternal child health services at the Murtoa College site. This centre was among the first 50 to be established and operated by the State Government.
With the welcomed construction and opening of the Bani Walup Early Learning and Childcare Centre in Murtoa, the former Murtoa Kindergarten and Maternal Child Health building, at 38-40 Marma Street Murtoa, was deemed a redundant building due to its current condition and that it was surplus to Council's requirements.
"We will continue to maintain the site while collaborating with the Murtoa Progress Association and community to determine a future use for the Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action's (DEECA) crown land asset", concluded Mrs Smith.
If the community has any questions in relation to the site, they are welcome to email info@yarriambiack.vic.gov.au
