Dealing with Fruit Fly in your Garden in October
With spring really underway now, it is more important than ever to get fruit fly under control before the damage is done in your garden. Combine several methods to deal with Queensland fruit fly in October: use traps for monitoring, apply bait sprays, protect ripening fruit with netting or bags, and maintain strict garden hygiene by picking up and destroying all fallen and ripening fruit daily. Informing your neighbours is also crucial, as success requires a community-wide effort.
Monitor and Trap
- Place traps in your garden to monitor for the presence of fruit flies.
- Male traps are effective for long-distance attraction.
- Monitor trap catches and be on high alert if even a mingle male fly is detected.
Protect Fruit
- Netting: Cover high-risk fruit, like early mandarins, apples, and pears, with fine netting to prevent the flies from reaching them.
- Bagging: Place individual fruit in bags to protect them. Be aware that contact with the fruit might allow eggs to be laid.
- Pruning: Prune trees to a manageable height to make them easier to inspect, spray, or cover with netting.
- Early Harvest: Harvest fruit as it ripens or harvest it early if it can be ripened indoors after picking.
Garden Hygiene
- Daily Clean-up: Collect and dispose of all fallen fruit from the ground every day.
- Destroy Fruit: Do not compost or put infested fruit in your garden waste. Instead, destroy the maggots inside by freezing, microwaving, boiling, or placing the fruit in a sealed plastic bag in the sun for at least 10-14 days before discarding it.
- Remove Unwanted Plants: Remove any neglected host plants or unwanted fruiting trees that could be breeding groups for the fruit fly.
Spraying
- If fruit fly is identified, use bait sprays according to the label instructions.
- Bait sprays attract and kill the flies but must be used consistently as part of a broader strategy.
- Encourage your neighbours to participate in control efforts to create a larger impact.
