Update - Yarriambiack Shire Affordable Housing Units Constructed and Ready for Residents
Yarriambiack Shire has made significant progress with its affordable housing initiative, successfully completing all seven units. The distribution includes two units in Murtoa, two in Woomelang, one in Warracknabeal, one in Rupanyup and the final one completed in Hopetoun.
This achievement was made possible by securing $2.8 million in funding through the Regional Infrastructure Fund – Round 2, State Government grant opportunity in 2022.
Mayor Andrew McLean expressed gratitude, stating that “the funding has allowed the realisation of the Council’s vision to offer alternative housing options for our older residents.”
“The primary goal is to provide downsizing opportunities into smaller, energy-efficient houses that require less maintenance, catering specifically to the needs of the aging population”, Mayor McLean explained.
The Shire has collaborated with Dunmunkle Lodge to manage the units in Murtoa, Warracknabeal, Rupanyup and Hopetoun. Following a thorough expression of interest and public notification process, the Council unanimously decided to enter into a 50-year lease agreement with Dunmunkle Lodge. Mayor McLean highlighted the significance of this proactive partnership, emphasising the combination of securing funds for housing expansion and collaborating with a reputable not-for-profit, Shire-based organisation for future management.
Mayor McLean continued, “We recognise that there is considerable demand for worker accommodation and a current shortage; therefore, some units may also be allocated for this purpose as needed and determined by Dunmunkle Lodge”.
The funding has also supported the subdivision and transfer of land in Cromie Street, Murtoa, to Murtoa Housing Innovation Pty Ltd. Mayor McLean said this initiative will support the construction of a further five homes in Murtoa.
Council is also subdividing land in Stewart Street, Rupanyup, with the potential sale of a parcel of land to further support housing growth across the Shire, Mayor McLean said.
Council is also progressing a nine-lot housing subdivision and planning scheme amendment at the former school site in Hopetoun to support further housing growth in the town.
Mayor McLean extended heartfelt thanks to the Victorian State Government for the funding and welcomed future opportunities for enhancing the housing stock within the Shire. The initiative stands as a positive example of effective collaboration between state government, local government and a not-for-profit organisations for community development.
