Be Fire Ready
Yarriambiack Shire’s most valuable resource is its Communities. To protect our Communities this summer we all need to take action now, fire prevention is a priority. The following information is a guide to some of the steps you can take to prepare yourself, your family and your property.
What you can do to prepare for the fire season Working in partnership: Council, Community, CFA, MFB, DSE, Parks Victoria, Police, VicRoads.
Keep Informed and Be Vigilant
- Visit the CFA website: www.cfa.vic.gov.au
- Call: Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667
- Listen to 59.4 ABC Radio (Local)
Prepare Your Property
- Keep grass cut and remove fine fuels (leaf litter, twigs) from your property
- Clean gutters and move wood piles away from your home
- Ensure your hoses can reach all areas of your property
- Trim overhanging branches
- Plant trees and shrubs away from your home
- If you live in a high bushfire risk area, consult with Council’s Planning Unit on tree and vegetation clearance
- Participate in Bushfire Action Week from 11 to 18 October, and ‘Prepare to be Fire Ready Day’ on 18 October (Fire Action Week Fact Sheet)
- Residents are eligible for FREE Green Waste Disposal – You can dispose of green waste at the transfer stations from 17 & 18th October. Please contact shire for list of Stations opening hours.
- Install an alternative water system – like a water tank with pump
- Install a sprinkler system
- Organise shelter for animals
Report Potential Fire Hazards In Your Local Area Report any fire risk concerns either on public or private property to Council on 5398 0100. (Council can take action by contacting the private property owner/undertaking mowing, working with the CFA, and with State Government land.) Prepare Yourself and Your Family
Have a plan: Make sure everyone in your household knows what the plan is and each person’s responsibilities. Stay alert for high risk days. Plan to Leave Early
- Decide when you will go
- Decide where you will go
- Decide how to get there (prepare a map, know your routes/exit points)
- Decide what you will take (important documents, valuables, emergency kit)
- Decide what to do with pets
- Decide who you need to tell (inform family and friends)
- Don’t leave late – If you decide to leave your home, you must do so before fire threatens
- and road travel becomes hazardous with fallen debris and low visibility
- Take enough clothes, toiletries, toys etc with you in case you cannot return to your home for a few days
KIT: Keep a torch, first aid kit, portable radio and spare batteries in a spot known to all the family as power may fail. Get Involved The CFA conducts community information sessions for residents each year.
